En nuestro primer día de viaje nos trasladamos al parque natural y reserva biológica de cabárceno de 750 hectáreas en el cual se pueden observar 111 especies diferentes de animales de las cuales 28 se encuentran en peligro de extinción y 7.000 árboles donde predominan los de hoja caduca característicos del norte.
El parque esta situado en una antigua mina de hierro con un paisaje de tipo cáustico. El color de sus piedras caliza es rojo debido a su alto contenido en oxido férrico.
Además de ser uno de los parque pioneros en investigación y en inseminación artificial en el se encuentran diferentes árboles y animales de Cantabria.
Muchas de las historias curiosas y tristes del parque nos fueron relatadas como la del Elefante llamado Cristina, que tiene dos años y medio y fue rechazada por su madre y se encuentra aislada. Cuidarla no fue fácil pues los criadores le tenían que suministrar 5 litros de leche cada 5 horas y un cuidador con ella porque si no se deprime.
El elefante que aparece a continuación se llama Mabo. Nació en África por lo que su genética es de una gran calidad y se pretende que sea el padre de las futuras criaturas que nacerán en este parque.
*Como curiosidad el guía que nos acompañó nos contó la historia de Xisco alias “Conde lequio” porque su atributo masculino medía 1.80 m y le pesaba 120 quilos.
Otra historia curiosa es la de los hipopótamos las Julietas y Romeo que tiene graves problemas para reproducirse puesto que las Julietas rechazan a su Romeo y este lleva 19 años sin poder acercarse a ellas.
Otra historia sorprendente es la del gorila Nadia que fue raptada y metida en un maletero y después la dejaron en un garaje durante 7 años por lo que esto le causó un trauma psicológico que le produce un desconocimiento de su identidad de gorila.
